In the past, crowns were a two appointment process. At the first appointment the dentist would prepare the tooth, take dental impressions with sticky materials, and fabricate a temporary crown to be worn for about two weeks. When you returned the temporary was removed and a new crown that was made at a lab was permanently cemented.
