It’s not just about your teeth anymore. Research has shown that poor oral health can contribute to the onset and severity of serious medical conditions. The biggest concern is periodontal disease, which is an infection that affects the gums and bone that surround your teeth. Millions of people have this condition and because it is often symptom free, may not even know it.
The American Academy of Periodontology says that conditions linked to gum disease so far include:
· Diabetes· Heart Disease
· Stroke
· Pregnancy Problems
· Respiratory Diseases
So, how does an infection in your mouth cause something like heart disease? There are two possibilities that we know of:
1. Bacteria – gum disease is a bacterial infection. It can get into your blood stream easily through the thin tissue in your mouth or when you swallow.
2. Inflammation – gum disease contributes to increased levels of chronic inflammation, which are now linked with the conditions above as well as others, like Alzheimer’s and Cancer.
The research continues and we will learn more, but what is clear is the importance of taking care of your oral health. If having a healthy mouth can help prevent these diseases, it could follow that it would also contribute to your having a longer and healthier life.
