Can Gum Disease Impact Your Fertility and Pregnancy?

You want your baby to have the best chance of a healthy arrival into the world.  You may focus on eating healthy foods or taking care of your body in preparation for the conception of your little one.  But, have you thought about seeing your dentist as part of the process.  Maybe you should.

Research indicates a link between oral health and the ability to conceive and have a healthy pregnancy.  Women who have periodontal (gum) disease or gingivitis are more likely to have difficulty getting pregnant.  Men with this condition may also have fertility issues or erectile dysfunction (ED).

Scientists believe the problem is chronic inflammation caused by gum disease, which gets into the bloodstream easily.  This inflammation is also connected to conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.   Periodontal disease can contribute to problems during your pregnancy or at birth, including preterm delivery and low birth weight.

Don’t let your oral health impact your ability to conceive or bring a healthy baby into the world.  See your dentist regularly and get screened for gum disease.  And, don’t forget to floss!
